The Contract Editor

The editor has three panes: the section rail on the left, the document canvas in the middle, and the details rail on the right.

The section rail

Each block in your contract is a section. Available section types:

  • Document header — your firm's name + the client's name in a two-column header (auto-fills from your Designer profile + the linked Client)

  • Scope of Work — bulleted list of deliverables

  • Payment Terms — flat-fee, hourly, milestone, retainer

  • Legal — boilerplate clauses (governing law, dispute resolution, etc.)

  • Revisions — included revisions + per-round charges

  • Warranties — limitations + disclaimers

  • Termination — kill-switch terms

  • Signatures — where signature, initials, and date fields land

Click + Add component at the bottom of the rail to insert a new section. Drag the handle on any section to reorder.

The document canvas

The canvas is sized to standard 8.5x11 letter paper, so what you see is what your client gets. Pages auto-paginate when a section overflows.

  • Edit text inline — click any text block; the rich-text toolbar appears

  • Add a page — bottom-left + Page button

  • Hide a page — three-dot menu on the page → Hide (the page stays in the editor but doesn't render in the signed PDF)

  • Reorder pages — drag a page in the page picker on the left

The details rail (right side)

Switches between two views:

  • Contract details — name, branding, color, font, client + project links, retainer amount, signing mode

  • Section settings — appears when you click a section; lets you edit the section's specific data (e.g. bullets for Scope of Work, rates for Payment Terms)

Field placement (for signatures, dates, text, etc.)

Once your signers are added (see Article 4), the Fields palette appears in the section rail:

  • Drag any field type onto the canvas

  • Drop it where it should sit on the page

  • Resize by dragging the corner handle

  • Assign to a specific signer via the field's small color tab (each signer gets a unique color)

Field types available: signature, initials, date, text, checkbox + nine more (radio group, dropdown, signed-by-name, signed-by-date, witness signature, witness date, attached file upload, etc.)

Walter — the AI assistant

Walter lives in the section rail. He can:

  • Draft a section from a short prompt

  • Improve the current section's wording

  • Generate items for a bulleted section (e.g. "give me 8 Scope of Work bullets for a kitchen remodel")

  • Draft a whole contract from one prompt describing the engagement

Walter uses your project context, so the output is tailored to the linked client / project when those are set.

Troubleshooting

  • Bold or italic isn't applying. Make sure the text is selected (highlighted) before clicking the toolbar button. If the toolbar isn't visible, click anywhere inside a text block first.

  • Section edits don't save. Once a contract is sent for signature, the body is frozen — you'll see a "view only" banner. To edit, void the current send (you'll need to send a fresh copy afterward).

  • Auto-pagination is splitting a section awkwardly. Move the section to its own page via Section settings → Page → New page, or shorten the section's content.

  • The signing rail says "Add at least one signature field" when I try to send. Drop a signature field onto the document before sending. Contracts without a signature field can't be sent — Workroom blocks the send so the signed copy isn't blank.
